Lazy Saturday

We decided to take it easy today, loaded Raven up, and went for a drive. We drove north towards the Dalton Highway. It's that icy road that the Ice Road Truckers drive on. Only right now it's not really that icy. It was a beautiful drive though.

On the way back down, we stopped at part of the Trans-Alaska Pipeline. Pretty impressive! We were just about 200 miles south of the Arctic Circle! That's insane! We're probably closer to Russia than we are to the rest of the lower 48!

Fall!

I love fall!! It's our favorite season for sure! There's only one type of tree here that changes colors - the aspen trees. And they are BEAUTIFUL! Travis took me on a short hike to the range at Ft Wainwright and we took a bunch of pictures. Sadly, there are no pictures of the two of us this time. See... I'm not used to the humidity, and my hair is starting to look a lot like an afro. So until I learn to style it accordingly... here's the fall pictures! :)

Mushrooms grow all over the place here.

What Color???

All the paint samples we have looked at are starting to run together. I need some help!

Here's the problem: I need a paint color for the walls/ceiling and trim. It's a little strange to me to have the ceiling painted the same color as the walls, but that's the option we were given. It's gonna be the same color all throughout the house. (I'm going to go back over the bedrooms while Travis is deployed and paint them individual colors, but that's down the road.)

Anyways... we looked at a couple other houses and they went with sandy colored walls/ceilings and white trim and it looked really good.

The walls need to match the kitchen cabinets:

...and the counter tops:

...and the tile/carpet which are both light brownish colors. I think a lighter color would work good, but it needs to look good against white trim. (I think.)

Help!!!!

Random Update

We've been in Alaska for just about two weeks... here's some random updates on what we've been up to:

- We started house hunting... and didn't find much. So we're building! We're using Cozy Homes Inc and should be in our new house by Thanksgiving! :)
- Travis' new unit is already scheduled for the "D word". He's going to be training a lot through the next few months. :(
- It's still daylight for about 20 hours out of the 24. We've learned to close the blinds at 7pm and pretend it's getting dark out.
- We've seen a few moose. They're HUGE!
- It's already getting cold. It was 50 degrees out this morning. Brrrr....
- I'm learning to crochet. We'll need the scarves when it's -40 out!
- We have to get our Jeep winterized. It's some kind of heater that goes in the engine and we'll have to plug it in at nights when it's below freezing.
- We don't have Internet in our apartment. (Honestly, I don't even know if we can get it.) But Fairbanks has a really nice library with fast wi-fi.

So far, we like it here. Fairbanks reminds us of home in a lot of ways. It's small and the people are friendly. There's tons of trees and wildlife too. We're looking forward to the snow. Hopefully we'll still really like it here after the winter season is over! :)

A Day of Ups and Downs

We made it to the Alaska Highway!! We have come to a conclusion... the military should advise against DITY moves to Alaska. Either that or they should compensate generously! Gas and lodging is so expensive through Canada. And tomorrow... we have to make sure to take extra gas with us, just in case. Gas stations are starting to get pretty sparse and the ones we do find can charge whatever they please. (This applies to hotels too!) The roads have BEAUTIFUL scenery, but can be pretty rough and winding. But if we weren't in a huge U-Haul, and just driving the Jeep, I think the drive might be worth it.

We've passed at least 50 moose crossing signs, but have yet to see a single moose. I'm hopeful for tomorrow though. :) We're getting up early to get on the road. I'd imagine moose are early risers too.
